Duties include: Assisting public at counter & over the phone; Accepting permit applications & plans; Providing information regarding property characteristics, department procedure, fee structure, ordinances, etc.; Maintaining files, maps, & electronic databases; Using computer & peripherals with CADD software to create drawings, construction plans, & record maps; Updating drawings & maps based on field inspections information; Creating locator maps for public use; Creating maps & databases for geographic information system; Manually creating pencil & ink drawings as needed; Checking plans prepared by in-house staff, other agencies, contractors, & public, for conformance codes, standards, current maps &/or plans, policies, engineering principles, & conditions for approval; Calculating fees; Assisting with field work such as surveying & traffic studies; Performing survey calculations; Setting stakes; Assisting in or performing routine field design; Making recommendations regarding signals, signs, pedestrian crossings, & other traffic regulatory devices; Assisting with building &/or public works inspections & performing routine inspections independently; Providing vacation & temporary relief in similar occupational fields as necessary. Required qualifications: Engineering Specialist I- Completion of college coursework in civil engineering, mathematics & drafting; 1 yr. exp. using CADD software, or any combination of training & exp. that provides desired knowledge & abilities; Engineering Specialist II- 3 yrs technical engineering-related exp. which includes computerized drafting &/or survey, or any combination of training & exp. that provides desired knowledge & abilities; 12 units of postsecondary coursework in mathematics &/or technical engineering may substitute for 1 yr. of exp. & additional exp. may be credited toward necessary education; Knowledge of land survey & drafting software applications, database management techniques, modern principles, practices, & standards of civil engineering design; Able to work independently based on written or verbal instructions in support of professional engineer &/or in functional supervision of others with minimal technical assistance, & apply sound judgments. Both Classes- Knowledge of drafting techniques, modern principles, practices, & standards of survey & civil engineering as applied to level of assigned public works projects, elementary algebra & geometry, code requirements & legal implications as applied to level & type of assigned engineering activity, computer word processing, & spreadsheet & database programs; Ability to prepare & interpret maps, drawings, & engineering records, perform moderately difficult arithmetical/mathematical calculations, analyze public works plans & apply engineering principles at level required by assignment, plan & complete work from written or verbal instruction, past practice, &/or standard procedures, use computer equipment & peripherals, & establish & maintain cooperative working relationships; Possession of or ability to obtain valid CA driver’s license; Able to occasionally lift objects up to 25 lbs. such as files, stacks of paper, & other reference materials. Occasional field work may require lifting objects up to 50 lbs. & involve active physical work, but not prolonged heavy exertion.
